Russian animator Alexander Nikolaevich Dorogov (Sasha) was born in Moscow on 9 April 1958. He was introduces to animation at 7: his father bought movie projector and two cartoons, "Nu pogodi" and "Shaibu, shaibu". Since he was 11, Sasha already studied on children animation courses, curated by Soyuzmultfilm studio. His first animated work was pretty romantic: a young man was waiting for his date, clutching the bouquet nervously, looking at watch again and again. Besides the animation courses Sasha went to art school.
In 1975 he already received his first job at Soyuzmultfilm as an inbetweener. All current workers had a rare benefit of watching Disney movies as part of their professional development: here Sasha first watched Disney's "Snow White and seven dwarfs". This education revealed the future path which Sasha was keen to follow.
Sasha was quick to learn and landed on assistant animator position in 1978. For him it wasn't enough: he started to teach animation on courses curated by Roman Davydov, director of the Soviet version of Mowgli.
In turbulent 90s many people's lives has changed, and Sasha's was no exception. In the beginning of the decade Disney representatives visited Russia with the aim of hunting young and talented artists. Many desired to work for Disney, so they rushed eagerly to participate in the competition. Alexander didn't want to miss this opportunity. He had 1,5 months to collect his portfolio and to make 9 seconds of original animation. Sasha chose to make animation of Mickey Mouse.
On his birthday he heard about the success, and in a couple of months he already moved to Florida to work in the word's famous animation studio: Disney. There he continued teaching animation to American students.
He worked on Disney studio until 2003. Then in 2004 - 2006 he participated in the animation project called "Act" in Boston, making appearances at Animation Mentor school. While in America, Sasha worked on modern classic: Lion King, Pocahontas, Lilo and Stitch, Brother Bear.
After his return to Russia in 2006 Sasha worked as animator on "Frog heaven", "Sapsan" projects; he also developed characters for other movies and taught animation on site. For example, in 2010 he trained young animator in the art of classical animation on Toonbox studio. Then he moved to Kyrgyzstan to BIGIM studio, where animation courses took place. Nowadays he reveals all the aspects of his tremendous experience while teaching in animation school. You can apply to Sasha Dorogov's Animation School using this site.
